ForeFlight comes to Europe

The new services will begin with a focus on the German market and include Jeppesen’s digital VFR and IFR navigation data, which are rendered directly on ForeFlight’s data-driven aeronautical map. VFR charts will show noise-sensitive areas and arrival and departure routes, as well as hazardous weather information (including icing and turbulence) on chart overlays. Eurocontrol-provided charts, documents, and aeronautical information publications will also be provided. Optional purchases will include Jeppesen VFR terminal procedures (formerly Bottlang charts), Jeppesen IFR global chart coverages, and host nation VFR data packages.

“Our team members in Denmark, Germany, U.K., and Finland—along with our large beta team and thousands of current European customers—are flying throughout Europe every week and helping us carefully craft a great product that works well here,” said Kim Lantz, ForeFlight European director  at an AERO Friedrichshafen press conference. “When we release ForeFlight Mobile for Europe later this summer, we expect pilots will find the integration of ForeFlight’s own data, Jeppesen VFR and IFR data, Eurocontrol data, and DFS data; our fast, accurate flight planning and routing; and the breadth of in-flight features combine to deliver a delightful experience that makes planning and flying in Europe a joy.”

There are three European service packages. The Basic Plus plan (106.99 euros per year) provides international flight plan filing, use of European VFR and IFR charts, and weight and balance and logbook functions. The Pro Plus package (213.99 euros per year) adds georeferencing on chart products, chart-on-map capability, global icing and special-use airspace alerts, synthetic vision, and global hazard advisories. The Performance Plus package (320.99 euros per year) contains all the above plus detailed aircraft performance profiles, highly accurate fuel calculations, and gives information on fuel policies and payload safety checks.

No in-flight datalink weather radar imagery is available in Europe because datalink radar services do not yet exist. Neither do any Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast services. However, ForeFlight users who have Appareo or Scout portable receivers will be able to see traffic returns from any ADS-B-out-equipped aircraft.
