Safety Spotlight: VFR into IMC
- An instrument rating is no guarantee against an accident.
- Understand weather trends that reduce ceilings and visibility.
- Always have an out and know your “bailout direction” where you can head for clear weather.
- Discuss your plan with another experienced pilot or CFI if there’s any uncertainty.
- Have a contingency plan and stick with it—don’t compromise.
- Be wary of “just taking a look.” It’s hard to come back once you’ve gained momentum.
- Use ATC services and declare an emergency if you enter IMC.
- Keep calm and transition quickly to cockpit instruments.
- Avoid sudden movements, especially head movement.
- Practice real-world VFR into IMC encounters and escapes with a qualified CFI.
