Evaluate your options

Sport pilot or BasicMed?

By Paul Feldmeyer

With the release of the Modernization of Special Airworthiness Certification (MOSAIC) rulemaking, many pilots are eager to take advantage of expanded sport pilot privileges.

While MOSAIC dramatically broadens the number of aircraft that qualify, flying under sport pilot rules still means accepting sport pilot limitations. For many pilots, BasicMed remains the best option.

When flying under the MOSAIC rulesmaking (see “Answers for Pilots: Back in the Air”), you are exercising sport pilot privileges and must comply with the associated limitations, including carrying only one passenger (even though you can fly up to four-seat airplanes) and flying airplanes with clean stall speeds of no more than 59 KCAS. BasicMed, by contrast, allows you to fly aircraft certified with up to seven seats. BasicMed also allows you to exercise your instrument rating privileges; sport pilot privileges do not permit IFR/IMC operations.

Under MOSAIC, pilots can use their driver’s license in lieu of a medical certificate to fly many common general aviation aircraft. But the right medical qualification for you depends on the type of flying you do. So while sport pilots may fly at night under MOSAIC, they must hold at least a third class medical or BasicMed to do so.

BasicMed also allows you to fly higher and operate significantly more capable aircraft. There is no calibrated clean stall speed limitation under BasicMed, and aircraft may weigh up to 12,500 pounds maximum takeoff weight.

Obtaining BasicMed is not burdensome. It requires a comprehensive medical exam with a state-licensed physician every 48 calendar months and an online course every 24 calendar months. For pilots who already hold at least a private pilot certificate, BasicMed provides substantially greater operational capability than flying while exercising sport pilot privileges. If you already hold a private certificate or higher, it is well worth considering BasicMed.
