The K9 punches well above its price point of $1,000. The bike can slow down just as quickly as it can speed up, boasting a Shimano nine-speed drivetrain and disc brakes. However, that is not the K9’s main selling point.
The K9 can fold in three different directions, shrinking itself to easily fit in the passenger seat or cargo area of small airplanes. When folded at all axes, the bike measures 28 by 16 by 20 inches. Additionally, the K9’s aluminum frame helps keep the bike’s weight low, totaling just under 23 pounds and making for an effortless lift.
Dahon prioritized safety, decking out the K9 with reflectors on the seat post, handlebars, both wheels, and both pedals. There is a bell beside the left brake lever, too, which is yet another feature to help navigate busy airport campuses.
The K9 provides a smooth and fun ride, climbing through all nine of its gears with ease. The tires are similar to those of a gravel bike, allowing for the best of both worlds when it comes to comfort and durability. It handled laps inside AOPA headquarters and outside at Frederick Municipal Airport (FDK) all the same.
The only downside to this bike is that it looks…unique. Functionality is at the forefront of its design, meaning that aesthetic appeal had to be sacrificed a bit. It comes in three colors, though: cream, matte obsidian, and quicksilver. So, you have options.
Overall, the Dahon K9 is an excellent transportation option for a pilot who wants to get around the airport quickly, smoothly, and comfortably without taking up every last inch of their airplane’s valuable space.
