AOPA Releases Potential Bylaw Changes, Seeks Member Feedback

FREDERICK, Md.—The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) Board of Trustees has released for member input seven potential changes to Association bylaws—changing among other things how trustees are nominated and elected, how long they may serve, the qualifications and term limits for the Chairman.

The potential changes were first announced by Board Chairman Jim Hauslein last month—and coincided with the announcement that he was stepping down as Chairman, and that he and former Board Chair Bill Trimble would leave the board in May. At the same time, the board elected Luke Wippler as Chairman.

The board and senior staff based these governance changes, in part, on member requests, and posted the current and potential bylaws online, along with notes explaining each change, and a form to submit feedback.

The seven potential changes to the bylaws include:

  1. The composition of the Nominating Committee.
  2. A new open nomination process for Trustee candidates.
  3. Staggered terms and term limits for trustees.
  4. Total number of trustees.
  5. A set of qualifications for new trustees.
  6. Qualifications and term limits for the Chairman.
  7. An update to file proxies ahead of the annual meeting.

The board will review all member input before finalizing the bylaw changes that will ultimately be voted on this Fall.

Wippler and AOPA Acting Co-President Katie Pribyl will also detail the bylaw changes at AOPA’s annual Pilot Town Hall at SUN ‘n FUN Aerospace Expo, which will take place on Wednesday, April 15, at 11:30 a.m. in the AOPA Tent.

AOPA also encourages members to attend the annual member meeting on May 12 at the National Aviation Community Center in Frederick, Maryland. Members planning to attend are asked to RSVP here.
