Santa Barbara, California: As the result of an above-average amount of rainfall this winter, the rolling hills and valleys of the California coast north of Santa Barbara was decked out in vibrant greens.”

Coronado Bridge, San Diego: San Diego is a pretty city surrounded by water from San Diego Bay to Mission Bay to La Jolla. This is one of my favorite cities to fly over.”

Mark Holtzman, Steven Holtzman, and their Cessna T206: I love capturing the many amazing aerial views that I come across while on assignment, whether it’s a picturesque landscape or an interesting cityscape. We use high-end digital cameras to capture these beautiful photos, and often shoot through the window or floor of my airplane for a unique perspective.”

Bolsa Chica wetlands, California: One of nature’s artworks at the Bolsa Chica wetlands in California near Huntington Beach; its intricate design resembles a mouth full of teeth.”

The 2020 Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California: We look forward to the annual Rose Bowl game and parade all year long; it has become a New Year’s Day tradition ever since 2009 when I captured a B–2 Stealth Bomber flying over the game. The entire flyover lasts only a moment.”

Lake Elsinore, California: An explosion of color in the hills surrounding Lake Elsinore, as the landscape bursts into life with a stunning array of yellow wildflowers and golden California poppies, transforming the normally arid area into a brilliant mosiac of color.”

California’s Central Valley: Scattered around the desert are small communities built around water-ski lakes. Some of these even have private landing strips. It has got to be pretty incredible to be able to fly and land next to your lakefront home.”

2022 Super Bowl flyover: Super Bowl LVI featured a truly unique flyover. The U.S. Air Force Heritage Flight conducted a special formation of five aircraft that represent 75 years of service. From the P–51 Mustang to the F–35 Lightning II, this historic flyover was unforgettable. It was an honor to be up in the air with such incredible machines and equally impressive pilots."

But it wasn’t until this Los Angeles-based aerial photographer captured the image of a U.S. Air Force stealth bomber streaking over the 2009 Rose Bowl, which appeared in Sports Illustrated and received second prize World Press Photo for Sports, that Mark Holtzman realized he’d captured something special. “I looked at my camera a lot differently after that,” he said. “It was game changing; I had just gone out to take a photo. Now they ask me every year if I’m coming.” Holtzman shoots from his Cessna 206, which has detachable windows and a port for vertical photos. He does aerial mapping work for cities, real estate developers, and construction firms. He also simply likes to fly and “see what I want to see.” Holtzman always has a co-pilot along; he is proud that he encourages and mentors fledging pilots, many of whom are pursuing an airline career. His son Steven often flies with him and is also an accomplished photographer. The father/son duo run West Coast Aerial Photography Inc. with Mark handling the photography and Steven handling the mapping and videos. “I feel fortunate to have a business with my son,” Mark says.
