But it wasn’t until this Los Angeles-based aerial photographer captured the image of a U.S. Air Force stealth bomber streaking over the 2009 Rose Bowl, which appeared in Sports Illustrated and received second prize World Press Photo for Sports, that Mark Holtzman realized he’d captured something special. “I looked at my camera a lot differently after that,” he said. “It was game changing; I had just gone out to take a photo. Now they ask me every year if I’m coming.” Holtzman shoots from his Cessna 206, which has detachable windows and a port for vertical photos. He does aerial mapping work for cities, real estate developers, and construction firms. He also simply likes to fly and “see what I want to see.” Holtzman always has a co-pilot along; he is proud that he encourages and mentors fledging pilots, many of whom are pursuing an airline career. His son Steven often flies with him and is also an accomplished photographer. The father/son duo run West Coast Aerial Photography Inc. with Mark handling the photography and Steven handling the mapping and videos. “I feel fortunate to have a business with my son,” Mark says.
