Garmin introduces height advisor for experimental, light sport aircraft

Garmin’s GHA 15 is a small, lightweight height advisor that utilizes the same fundamental technology as a radar altimeter to deliver height above ground information in light aircraft equipped with Garmin’s G3X Touch flight displays.

The GHA 15 bounces radio waves off the ground and calculates the time it takes to receive the signals back, giving the user the height above the ground, water, or terrain. According to Garmin, the device “processes hundreds of measurements per second and applies advanced digital filters to maintain continuous readings.” The agl readouts are displayed on Garmin’s G3X Touch display and drawn on the altitude tape or gauge at altitudes up to 500 feet agl.

Together, the GHA 15 and G3X Touch display can provide pilots with audible agl callouts via their audio output. Users can select intervals to hear audio callouts from 300 feet down to one foot, and configure callouts to occur or stop at specified altitudes.

The device attaches to the bottom of the aircraft and according to Garmin, is slightly larger than a deck of cards, weighs less than one pound, and requires minimal space and modifications to the aircraft.

The GHA 15 will be available in August and is expected to cost $1,995. Additional information is available on Garmin’s website.
