Cessna 170B will take us off the beaten path

The 2023 AOPA Sweepstakes aircraft debuted at EAA AirVenture.
Expect ramp appeal to increase once we’re finished transforming this stock 1953 Cessna into a backcountry beast. However, the distinctive rounded tail probably won’t change. The interior will get an overhaul with the rest of the airplane. Should we keep that yoke or have a new one made out of carbon fiber? (Photography by Leigh Hubner)

The aircraft is a 1953 Cessna 170B (N3224A), a well-rounded, classic airplane with predictable handling. AOPA selected the Cessna 170B as the 2023 sweepstakes aircraft to showcase how select modifications can drastically expand a commonplace taildragger’s mission. In its current stock condition, the airplane is far from a backcountry performer. The 145-horsepower engine and cruise-pitched prop deliver lackluster performance, and its standard tires prefer manicured grass and pavement to rugged strips.

Soon, however, it will be ready for the backcountry.

We will increase the aircraft’s horsepower from 145 to 180; outfit it with bigger tires, a lightweight interior, and modern VFR instruments, and fit it with other modifications, not to mention a dramatic paint scheme perfect for backcountry adventures. You’ll be able to see the Cessna 170 up close and personal as we spread the joy of flying by taking it to grass runways and camping off the beaten path.
