Garmin updates inReach Mini

Garmin’s inReach Mini 2, announced February 2, enables two-way text messaging from virtually anywhere. A monthly satellite service subscription (starting at $11.95) enables an SOS button that can summon emergency responders through the Garmin International Emergency Response Coordination Center. The device allows that dispatch center to communicate with the user and notify local responders. Updates on the progress of search and rescue or other emergency response are pushed to the device while the user waits for responders to arrive.

Listed at $399.99, inReach Mini 2 is just under 4 inches tall and 2 inches wide and weighs 3.5 ounces. The battery allows up to 14 days of continuous run time in the default tracking mode (location tracked every 10 minutes). Those facing a longer stay in the great north woods can extend the battery life to 30 days by setting the tracking function to 30-minute intervals.

The device connects with a wide range of Garmin electronics, and a TracBack feature allows users to retrace their steps with visual guidance from the device. An electronic compass displays heading accurately, even when stationary, and inReach Mini 2 leverages the GALILEO, QZSS, and BeiDou satellite networks to speed initial acquisition, Garmin reported in the news release.
