Icon seeking overseas sales

Icon Aircraft is seeking FAA certification of its amphibious A5 in the primary category to facilitate overseas sales.

Officials from the California company said they expect to receive FAA approval by the end of this year, and that they anticipate foreign sales will soon account for 25 percent of total sales.

The A5 currently flies under light sport aircraft rules that are based on industry standards that are less stringent than FAA certification.

The two-seat Icon A5 has folding wings and a spin-resistant design, carbon-fiber construction, and sports car styling. The certified version will have options such as a Garmin G3X primary flight display/multifunction display and a Garmin autopilot.

Retail prices for the A5 are $399,000 for the certified version with a G3X; $385,000 for a light sport aircraft with a G3X, and $359,000 for a light sport aircraft with a basic instrument panel.
