Maule owner wins tundra tires at AOPA Fly-In

A Maule is right at home in the backcountry. Equipping it with tundra tires is a bonus.

Gary Smith of Monrovia, Maryland, won a set of tundra tires through AOPA's 2019 Goodyear Tundra Tire Sweepstakes at the AOPA Fly-In in Frederick, Maryland. Pilots can enter the sweepstakes at AOPA's two other fly-ins this year. Photo by Chris Rose.

Gary Smith of Monrovia, Maryland, will get his first taste of flying with tundra tires after he installs the set he won during the AOPA Fly-In at Frederick, Maryland, on his 1985 Maule M5. Smith won a set of Goodyear smooth tubeless 26-inch tires after signing up for AOPA’s 2019 Goodyear Tundra Tire Sweepstakes.

Smith is based at the Ijamsville Airport, near Frederick Municipal Airport, and said he looks forward to flying the Maule on tundra tires to his farm in Virginia that has a grass strip.

Smith had stopped flying for about 30 years and got back into it two years ago on his sixty-first birthday when he bought the Maule. (He talked his wife into the idea of buying an airplane because their grandchildren had expressed an interest in flying.)

“It’s been a learning experience,” Smith said of flying the Maule. He had about 200 hours total time when he purchased the airplane, but none of it in the Maule.

Now, he’ll have all new learning experiences as he adjusts to flying on tundra tires—he’s already been watching videos on technique—and explores new strips to try them out.

AOPA’s 2019 Goodyear Tundra Tire Sweepstakes will take place at the two remaining AOPA Fly-Ins: Livermore, California, June 21 and 22, and Tullahoma, Tennessee, Sept. 13 and 14. If you attend one of those, be sure to stop by the Exhibit Hall and enter your name for a chance to win!
