Wyoming airport to dedicate new general aviation facilities

AOPA will participate in a Wyoming celebration of aviation on July 18 when the Southwest Wyoming Regional Airport in Rock Springs dedicates its new general aviation terminal and a new hangar facility for fixed-base operator Sweetwater Aviation.

Afternoon tours of the facility will start at 3 p.m., with Gov. Matt Mead presiding over the formal dedication ceremony at 4 p.m. The activities will work up visitors’ appetites in time for a barbecue from 5 to 7 p.m.

Warren Hendrickson, AOPA Northwest Mountain Region manager, will be on hand to help celebrate the modernization of the airport—formerly Rock Springs-Sweetwater County Airport—that changed its name to Southwest Wyoming Regional Airport on Feb. 1.

Members who fly in for the festivities can take advantage of a special fuel price as the county-owned airport sells 100LL avgas for $4.64/gallon on dedication day.

The county’s airport board broke ground in June 2017 for the $5.4 million project to replace facilities constructed in the 1920s. (Take a video tour of the new facilities.)

Later in 2017, airport director Devon Brubaker was honored with an airport manager of the year award from the Wyoming Airport Operators Association in recognition of the airport’s growth, and “record increases in fuel sales, passengers and customer satisfaction,” under his leadership. Brubaker was also credited with securing millions of dollars in federal, state, and private grant funding, as well as negotiating lower airfares with a carrier providing service from the airport, according to a news report.
