Altaport, Truckee-Tahoe Airport join effort to find hangar space

Have you ever gazed down a row of airport hangars and wondered how many of them might be empty and potentially available for overnight parking? Altaport, an airport services company, said many airports have such space, and has developed a platform that transient pilots can use to find and book short-term aircraft storage.

Truckee-Tahoe Airport in California, which, like many airports across the United States, has long waiting lists for long-term hangar leases but also has many empty hangars on the field that could be made available to transient aircraft. At Truckee, an average of 30 percent of hangars are vacant each night, the company said.

The system is similar to Hangar Direct, which launched in 2024, listed hangar sales, rentals, and leases at 16 California airports on February 6, as well as additional listings in many other states. Both platforms are modeled on Airbnb, Vrbo, and other platforms for short-term apartment and vacation-home rentals.

Altaport said its booking tool allows airports to manage their available hangar space more precisely and to potentially generate revenue by offering hangar space to transient pilots. The platform also allows the airport and its hangar tenants to participate in a revenue-sharing arrangement that benefits both parties, Altaport said.

“Truckee Tahoe Airport is excited to partner with Altaport to expand our Overnight Hangar Rental program. By leveraging Altaport’s technology, we match tenants’ vacant hangar times with short-term rental needs through a seamless revenue-sharing model,” says Jeff Manasco, director of aviation at Truckee-Tahoe Airport. “Tenants love the opportunity to support the GA community while reducing their rent. As pioneers in General Aviation, this is another step in our commitment to sustainable aviation. Who says airports can’t share and play nice?"

The new short-term hangar rental plan adds to a range of transient management services that Altaport offers at airports around the world, from collecting ramp fees to tracking operations.

Altaport’s hangar rental system is available for airports across the country and joins a range of methods pilots have used to find hangar space.

Pilots have long used social media platforms including Facebook Marketplace to connect aircraft owners with hangar owners who have space available. Airport managers also field inquiries about hangar availability. The process of finding short-term aircraft storage could become more tightly organized and controlled as the demand for hangars increasingly outstrips supply.
