Since the Broward County Commission voted on Wednesday to impose landing fees on general aviation aircraft at Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport, AOPA is taking the issue to the FAA's Orlando Airport District Office. "We're disappointed that the commissioners didn't look at other options - like increasing fuel flowage fees," said AOPA Vice President of Airports Bill Dunn. "These landing fees will significantly add to administrative expenses and put more money in the pockets of the fixed-base operators who will be collecting these fees and who supported their implementation. The county expects these new fees will generate $700,000 per year. FBOs will keep 10 percent for collecting the new fee and stand to add $70,000 to their bank accounts. AOPA will be raising the issue of fairness of these fees with the FAA." The landing fee is 97 cents per 1,000 pounds of nominal gross landing weight for each GA landing, with a minimum fee of $10.
