International Chicken Wing Day. Disobedience Day. International Joke Day. These goofy calendar holidays typically pass and most of us barely notice.
But some of these occasions represent marketing opportunities for you. Summertime seems to be full of fun occasions that you can incorporate in your email marketing.
Writing for Business2Community.com, Kristen Dunleavy picks out several obscure summer holidays. Her examples may be aimed at retail businesses, but with a little creativity, you can make them appropriate for your audience, too.
Consider “Take Your Dog to Work Day” (June 22). Use social media to engage with your customers by soliciting pictures of their pups. Who doesn’t love pictures of dogs? And pictures of dogs and airplanes are even better. You could use the date to discuss flying with pets, animal rescue mission flying, and more in your email newsletter.
How about “Sunglasses Day” (June 27)? If you happen to sell sunglasses, this is a perfect opportunity to run a special sale. But even if you don’t, use it as a jumping-off point to remind your clients about the importance of protecting their eyes and skin against ultraviolet rays when flying.
Then there’s “I Forgot Day” (July 2). Pilots hate to forget anything, because it could cause problems during a flight. But you can make this a light-hearted excuse to wish your customers a belated happy birthday, or even run a special on checklists and flight manuals.
Shark Awareness Day (July 14). Sharks and airplanes don’t go together well, but, as Dunleavy points out, “it’s an excuse for marketers to employ dramatic shark imagery and urgent copy about ‘giant sales’ that are ‘taking a bite out of our normal prices.’” Or something.
Just Because Day (August 27) “is a chance to do something without rhyme or reason.” It provides the perfect non-reason for an incentive or a promotion, as in, “We’re offering you this special offer…just because we want to.” Flight schools also could capitalize on Just Because Day by promoting introductory flights, or offering an incentive to clients who bring in friends or family for introductory flights.
That’s just a few months’ worth of ideas. Find ideas for the rest of the year and you might never run out of email newsletter content again.
