Good Aviation Reads

Reading has always been a common pastime for many, but its popularity significantly jumped during the pandemic. In fact, print book sales rose 8.2 percent in 2020—the best year in a decade for hard copy book sales.

And with the rise of #BookTok, the reading trend isn’t slowing down anytime soon. In fact, the hashtag on TikTok’s platform has more than 67 billion views where avid readers can connect with others, give reviews, and share a passion for literature.

The best thing about reading is there’s a book for everyone—no matter what genre you gravitate towards. For us avgeeks, that may mean cracking open the FAR AIM or PHAK… but believe me, there’s plenty of other great aviation books out there.

Here are some great reads to checkout!

The Wright Brothers: We had to start with the classics. This New York Times bestseller showcases the story behind two pioneers who taught the world to fly and changed history. The book received rave reviews on goodreads.

Stick and Rudder: An Explanation of the Art of Flying: This book is the definition of an oldie but a goodie. Described as one of the best texts on stick and rudder flying, this book goes over the fundamentals and mechanics of hand flying an airplane. It’s often referred to as the Bible for aviators.

The Spirit of St. Louis: One of the most popular aviation books of all time, The Spirit of St. Louis takes readers on a first-hand account of Charles Lindbergh’s life and journey as a barnstormer, military pilot, and early mail pilot.

Understanding Air France 447: Written by an A330 Captain, this book gives insight into contributing factors that led to the fatal crash in 2009 that killed all 228 on board. The book offers valuable lessons for pilots of any aircraft.

Skunk Works: A Personal Memoir of My Years at Lockheed: Readers rave about this “behind the scenes” look at how the United States most successful aircraft were created. Skunk Works is a memoir about the events and projects undertaken at Lockheed’s aerospace development wing.

Bonus Beach Read: Ugly love: Okay, Okay, this one is definitely for the ladies, and although it isn’t really an aviation book, the main character is a pilot. The romance novel became a hit sensation for young adults thanks to #BookTok and its bestselling author Colleen Hoover.
