Leaf Peeping

AOPA Pilot Gear

It might not be too late to get in your favorite airplane (or get your favorite pilot and their airplane) and fly over the loveliest leafy locales and see nature’s autumn display.

Here in central Maryland, the leaves have just started changing, so we hopped in the AOPA Sweepstakes Tiger and went up on a cold, blustery, cloudy autumn afternoon and checked out some of the colors in our area.

We saw mostly yellows and shades of orange with the occasional red scattered here and there. Even more amazing was when the sun peeked through the clouds spotlighting some of the leaves. Following the mountain range, we ended up over historic Harpers Ferry, WV and the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers, then south over the Potomac taking in the scenery.

We even caught a glimpse of a star-shaped mylar balloon floating past our right wing at 3,000 feet.

It won’t be long until all the leaves have turned brown and fallen off the trees, if they haven’t already in your hometown.

We’d love to see your favorite leaf peeping photos, so tag us on Instagram (@flywithaopa) in your posts or stories, use the hashtag #AOPALeafPeep, and maybe we’ll share your pics on our story or profile.
