Joby J208 makes transcontinental history

Retrofitted Cessna 208 Caravan logs 3,199 miles with zero manual control inputs

Joby Aviation Inc. has claimed a new milestone in aviation history after completing a fully autonomous transcontinental flight across the United States. The flight utilized a retrofitted Cessna 208 Caravan, equipped with Joby’s J208 autonomous flight technology. It spanned 3,199 miles across 10 states with zero control inputs from the onboard safety pilot.

Part of Joby’s monthlong 2026 Electric Skies tour, the eastbound journey departed Buchanan Field in Concord, California, on September 7. It concluded seven days later on September 14, at Dare County Regional Airport in Manteo, North Carolina. It is likely the first civilian autonomous aircraft to cover that distance.

The aircraft performed autonomous taxi, takeoff, en route navigation, and landing operations. The entire mission was monitored under real-time, remote supervision from up to 2,323 miles away at both Joby's Autonomy Headquarters in California and Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina. Per FAA regulations, a safety pilot always remained in the cockpit, but Joby’s J208 software suite handled every phase of flight autonomously.

The system successfully managed complex airport environments, proving its ability to mingle seamlessly with standard aviation traffic by navigating Phoenix Deer Valley Airport—one of the nation's busiest general aviation hubs. Ultimately, the flight demonstrated the real-world viability of Joby's autonomy technology for commercial freight, emergency response, and defense logistics.

The cross-country mission also served as an active testing ground for state-level integration. Flights in North Carolina supported a study of healthcare logistics feasibility, Joby noted in a press release. The company has also contributed to a Utah program to evaluate airspace integration on behalf of the FAA.

While Joby is best known for developing its own electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) passenger air taxis, a project it began in 2009, the company fast-tracked its autonomous capabilities by acquiring Xwing's autonomy division in 2024. With that acquisition, Joby inherited a modified Cessna 208 Caravan that had already completed several smaller-scale autonomous milestones. Joby dubbed the aircraft the J208 and scaled the technology.

The aircraft's return flight westbound, is planned to include stops in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina; Fredericksburg, Virginia/Washington, D.C.; Louisville, Kentucky; Wichita, Kansas; Oklahoma City; Salt Lake City; and Portland, Oregon.
