At a time when many pilots are worried about the rising cost of training, a group of Florida aviators is asking supporters to back a different kind of aviation initiative: a specialty license plate designed to help fund future aviation scholarships; Florida just launched an easier way to purchase the required presale voucher online.
The Florida general aviation specialty plate is designed to raise scholarship funds for Florida residents pursuing careers in aviation. Organizers say proceeds would support aspiring aviation professionals, including pilots, aircraft mechanics, air traffic controllers, aerospace engineers, airport operations personnel, meteorologists, and others.
Supporters are not yet able to purchase the physical plate. Instead, Floridians are being asked to purchase presale vouchers required under the state's specialty license plate approval process. If organizers reach 3,000 presale voucher commitments before the October state deadline, Florida's proposed Support General Aviation specialty plate could move into full production, with proceeds supporting aviation career pathways.
Organizers say the campaign serves two purposes: helping create scholarship opportunities while also increasing public awareness for GA and the broader aviation workforce that supports communities throughout the state.
The Aerospace Center for Excellence (ACE), in Lakeland, Florida, the nonprofit behind the Sun 'n Fun Aerospace Expo, will manage the scholarship program associated with the plate. Organizers say funds raised through the program would help expand access to aviation training and career development opportunities.
While most people encounter aviation through airlines, the broader GA industry includes local airports, instructors, emergency services, and thousands of skilled workers who keep the system operating every day.
For many students, cost can interrupt or delay training progress. Organizers, including AOPA and local EAA chapters, hope the scholarship funding generated through the proposed plate program could help reduce some of those barriers and support long-term workforce development within aviation.
Florida's Division of Motorist Services just created an easier way to purchase presale vouchers online by creating an account or logging in through FLHSMV.gov. After signing in, users can select the "Motor Vehicle" option from the main menu, then choose "Specialty License Plate Voucher."
