Lycoming extends TBO for many engines

With the release of Service Instruction 1009BF, factory-new and factory-rebuilt engines including many in the O-320, IO-320, O-360, IO-360, IO-390, O-540, and IO-540 series will have extended TBOs when operated and maintained in accordance with all applicable Lycoming technical publications and FAA airworthiness requirements. Lycoming says the new 2,600-hour TBO adds 400 hours to the previous base TBO for fixed-wing aircraft and 300 hours to the previous base TBO for rotorcraft.

“Lycoming’s updated TBO schedule represents our ongoing focus on delivering maximum value, reliability, and performance to aircraft owners, operators, and maintainers,” said Jim Wright, senior vice president of Lycoming Engines. “This enhancement reflects decades of engineering experience combined with the latest fleet data.”

The company said the TBO extension reflects endurance testing and fleet data that confirm strong durability under the specified operating conditions. Affected engines are listed in the service instruction, which excludes the engines affected by and not yet in compliance with Airworthiness Directive 2012-19-01.
