New display brings ForeFlight into the panel

Pilots who rely on ForeFlight for flight planning will soon be able to view the popular navigation app's display of charts, procedures, and flight information in the instrument panel.

The new display, called Sentry SkyPlay Mini, was developed by uAvionix and Jeppesen ForeFlight. The 3-inch display installs in a standard instrument opening without extensive modifications and features a dedicated rotary knob and tactile controls, providing an alternative to touch-screen inputs.

The additional display gives pilots another way to interact with ForeFlight during phases of flight when tapping an iPad may be less practical, such as in turbulence or high-workload situations. Because the system remains synchronized with the mobile app, changes made on either device are reflected on the panel without the pilot having to re-enter information.

The new display builds on uAvionix's earlier ForeFlight integration for the AV-30-C, which allowed pilots to wirelessly transfer flight plans from ForeFlight to the panel, and in compatible aircraft, provide GPS steering guidance to the autopilot. The Sentry SkyPlay Mini expands that relationship by bringing ForeFlight information directly into the instrument panel.

Working demonstrations will be available at the uAvionix and ForeFlight booths during EAA AirVenture Oshkosh in Wisconsin. The companies did not include price information in a July 14 press release that noted Sentry SkyPlay Mini units are expected to ship later this year.
