Me and my airplane

Sometimes solo is best—although these members love to share the joy of flying. Keep those stories and photos coming!

Sling 4

I love my Sling 4 because I built it, and I love flying it even more. It took me six and a half years to build it, mostly in my garage, and I’ve been flying it for four years now. With its full suite of Garmin avionics, it is a great IFR platform (I got my instrument rating a few months ago) and it is miserly with fuel. I certainly don’t mind flying it solo, but I much prefer to take along a passenger or two to share the joy of flying.

Cessna 140

Katy was a tired old bird born in Wichita in August 1947, until skilled craftsmen breathed new life into her. Now Katy is a fun time traveler into grass strips in the Pacific Northwest.

1955 Cessna 310

First owned by actor Jimmy Stewart. I fly once a week for fun and travel and have been from Alaska to Maine. Flying to Maine is a monthly trip in the summer to sail and fish. Aircraft is full IFR, and an autopilot would be a nice addition but unavailable for this early model.

1946 Piper PA-12 Super Cruiser

It’s a jump in and go anywhere airplane. It’s got great takeoff and landing characteristics and good useful load. I just love it. It cruises at 100 mph with a climb prop and seats three.

2005 Lancair Columbia 350

This is my sixth airplane since I started flying 20 years ago. My 2005 Lancair Columbia 350 is sleek, fast, and comfortable. Air conditioning makes flying in summer bearable. I love her. My only regret was it took 20 years to find her!
