New Tecnam twin certified in Europe

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency issued a type certificate for the Tecnam P2006T NG, clearing the way for delivery of the revamped light twin to customers and bringing it closer to FAA certification.

Hundreds of P2006Ts have entered service since the aircraft’s debut 15 years ago. Tecnam said it has made “continuous enhancements” to the design during that time in response to feedback from operators around the world. The NG model, however, goes beyond incremental upgrades.

Compared with its predecessor, the P2006T MkII, the NG model has an increased maximum takeoff weight of 1,290 kilograms (2,844 pounds), up from 1,230 kilograms (2,712 pounds) for the previous model.

The NG is equipped with Rotax 912 iSc3 engines, which are upgraded versions of the 912 S3 engines on previous P2006T models, including fuel injection and advanced electronic engine controls. Tecnam said the engines consume as little as 3.7 gallons of avgas each per hour. The new engines are the same as the powerplants in the company’s P-Mentor single-engine trainer, so training fleets using both types could benefit from interchangeability of engines and related parts.

Tecnam upgraded the NG models to the Garmin G1000 NXi flight deck and redesigned the panel and console to accommodate the avionics. The company said it improved accessibility with separate doors for the left and right front seats, a third for rear passengers, and a fourth for the baggage compartment. Redesigned windows improve visibility as well as the aircraft’s styling, and a luxurious sport model adds leather trim, an Alcantara headliner, and carbon fiber panels and accents “for those seeking exclusivity,” Tecnam said.

“I would like to thank my design and certification team for this great result!” said Giovanni Pascale Langer, Tecnam managing director. “Today, with this new certification, Tecnam confirms its position as one of the most prolific aircraft manufacturers, as we certify several new designs every year in order to offer our customers the most advanced aircraft.”
