EAGLE calls on pilots to report unleaded experience

Coalition seeks to help FAA validate safe options

A government-industry coalition seeking to accelerate the arrival of a safe unleaded fuel suitable for all aircraft urged owners to report their unleaded fuel experience to the FAA.

Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin 2025-04 asks aircraft owners who have used unleaded fuel to report details of their experience, including any service difficulties or abnormal maintenance issues, or the absence of such issues.

The Eliminate Aviation Gasoline Lead Emissions (EAGLE) initiative, of which AOPA is a founding member, called on pilots, aircraft owners, mechanics, and FBOs to “help shape the future of general aviation” by responding to the FAA’s request.

“Pilots, owners, maintainers and FBOs across the country are on the front lines of the shift to unleaded fuel,” EAGLE co-chair Curt Castagna said in an April 15 news release. “These experiences and reports are essential to validating safe alternatives and identifying potential challenges early. We urge everyone flying or servicing aircraft on unleaded avgas to share their experiences—it’s how we ensure a smooth and successful transition for the entire industry.”

The FAA seeks as much detail as possible, including photos and descriptions of issues, along with details of maintenance conducted prior to the use of unleaded fuel. The FAA asks those who respond to also include details on the aircraft and engine make and model, approximate time since the last overhaul, an estimate of how much fuel was used before an issue was observed, hours flown using unleaded fuel, the manufacturer and type of unleaded fuel used, and other information relevant to any issues observed.

The FAA seeks reports via email (with "Unleaded Fuel" in the subject line). AOPA invites those who submit information about their experience with 100-octane unleaded fuels to also paste a copy into this form, as the association continues to collect as much information as possible about high-octane unleaded fuels.
