But like a handheld GPS, there are still pilots who like their technology dedicated, thank you very much.
TrafficAssist is an app for that crowd. As a dedicated traffic app, TrafficAssist won’t show you the weather, your moving map, or how much fuel it will take to reach your destination. What it does show is traffic from ADS-B sources in a TCAS-like display on an Android device. It’s at first hard to see the logic in investing in something like this when you can get traffic via ForeFlight Mobile or Garmin Pilot, but after using it on a few flights, I can see the appeal.
First, if you fly bigger airplanes and are accustomed to a TCAS display, it provides the closest approximation you’re going to find. There’s also a major benefit to having a dedicated display for traffic. Despite being one of the most important features of our cockpit information revolution, it’s often just another layer on a cluttered display. Having a phone or another tablet mounted somewhere close that shows the targets clearly is a great benefit.
The app connects to several ADS-B devices, and traffic alerts show when a target is getting too close for comfort. There’s a free version that works for 30 minutes to get a feel before you have to shell out for the unrestricted version.
