Flight bags for every budget

A well-designed bag makes your flying more enjoyable

Do you need a flight bag? A dedicated flight bag can be a big help whether you’ve just started lessons, have your ticket and fly weekend $100 hamburger runs, or you’re a Cirrus driver who can afford what you want.
It helps keep your precious equipment safe; keeps your iPad, tablet, charts, and other flight essentials in dedicated compartments; and allows you to prepare for possible emergencies and/or the possibility of being weathered out and needing to stay overnight. A good flight bag has a padded compartment for your headset; separate compartments for other gear such as your iPad; and room for good-to-haves such as a flashlight, extra batteries, and your toothbrush. Your bag should be lightweight, be made of a durable material, and match your flying life. Consider backpacks or commuter bags; a versatile design that adapts to both your needs and the size and space of the aircraft you fly is important. Flight bags come in different prices, depending on the size, material, and brand. Your budget will play a major role in deciding which flight bag to purchase.

Photography by Rebecca Boone. While the structured, padded compartments of traditional flight bags help keep headsets and chargers tidy, they also add bulk and weight. The soft canvas sides of the Flight Outfitters Sandbar Tote squeeze easily into tight spaces of general aviation baggage compartments—or expand to carry a seemingly limitless haul of supplies. With an interior accessory organizer and a padded interior pocket for an iPad, the tote has enough compartments to keep small items organized and swallows the rest in a large main compartment. The tote measures 17 inches high, 21 inches wide at the top, and 15 inches wide at the bottom. For one family trip I packed three headsets, a bulky iPad kneeboard, one large water bottle, and the contents of a mid-size purse and had room to spare. Mary Poppins would be proud. —Sarah Deener
