CAU again hosts US Air Force Aim High Flight Academy
Organized by the Air Force Recruiting Service Detachment 1, the AIM High Flight Academy (AHFA) stands as a beacon of opportunity, offering a three-week introductory flight academy to aspiring aviators. This partnership between CAU and the Air Force aims to ignite a passion for aviation and leadership in the next generation.
Selected students, ages 16-23, will receive one-on-one flight training from CAU certified flight instructors, logging up to 15 hours of invaluable flight time.
Beyond the flying, student cadets will delve into crucial aviation concepts in classroom sessions, covering topics such as aviation safety and weather fundamentals. Field trips to a professional air traffic control tower and the nearby Air Force base provide real-world context, enriching the learning experience.
On top of the flying instruction and introduction to the various aviation career pathways, cadets will have the opportunity to be immersed in CAU’s vibrant university environment. They’ll stay in on-campus student housing, dine at the University café, and enjoy other amenities alongside CAU students at the 20-acre aviation campus located in Bakersfield, California.
Cadets from last year’s academy at CAU expressed they enjoyed meeting new people from a variety of ages and backgrounds and building connections with CAU instructors and Air Force mentors. Visiting the local Air Force Base and taking flight for the first time was another highlight for many cadets.
“My favorite part [was] the very first take off on our very first flight lesson,” said AHFA 2023 cadet Daisy L.“ That was when everything culminated from ground school, you know the aerodynamics and the physics principles. It all just came alive at that moment, and it was just so euphoric.”
As an aviation scholarship program, the Air Force generously covers all program expenses, including flight training, accommodations, meals, and travel, which helps ensure accessibility to aspiring aviators from diverse backgrounds.
Prior experience isn’t a prerequisite for acceptance to AHFA, widening the horizons for individuals with a passion for aviation.
Collaborating with the Air Force has aligned perfectly with CAU's commitment to introduce aviation to those who might be curious about flying.
“Hosting the Air Force’s AIM High Flight Academy again this year is an honor for us at California Aeronautical University,” said CAU President Matthew Johnston. “This partnership exemplifies the University’s mission to inspire and educate the next generation of aviation professionals. We look forward to welcoming the cadets to our campus and providing them an unforgettable, immersive aviation experience.”
California Aeronautical University will host 72 cadets over three three-week sessions from May to August 2024.
