Extra's new apex arrives

Extra Aircraft unveiled one of the first U.S. examples of its newest ultra-high-performance aerobatic aircraft—the single-seat Extra 330SX.

“It’s the successor of the 10-times-world champion Extra 330SC,” said Marcus Extra, son of company founder Walter Extra and recent winner of the national unlimited freestyle championship in his native Germany. “It’s much easier to fly than the SC—and that converts to higher scores in aerobatic competition.”

The 330SX (reviewed in the April issue of AOPA Pilot) has a retail price of $550,000, and deliveries take about one full year to fulfill. The company has sold 10 of the highly specialized 330SX model and produced five.

Airshow pilot Bob Freeman is the first U.S. customer for the 330SX and was scheduled to fly his airplane in the daily airshow at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, on July 22.

“It’s the most incredible airplane I’ve ever flown,” said Freeman, a veteran performer and aerobatic competition pilot who has owned multiple Extra models. “I bought this one sight-unseen because of my extreme confidence in the company.”

Freeman, who flies out of Longmont, Colorado, has flown his 330SX about 75 hours since it was delivered in April.

Extra Aircraft has built about 850 airplanes since it was founded in Germany 43 years ago. Most of those aircraft are registered and flying in the United States.
