Final Exam
Question

I am a U.S. resident and am about to train to fly light sport aircraft in the United Arab Emirates. Will this foreign credential be valid to rent and fly LSAs in the United States, or is there a way to convert it into an FAA certificate?
Answer
There is no provision in the FAA regulations for the recognition of a foreign pilot credential at less than the private pilot level to fly a U.S-registered aircraft in the United States. You would have to go through the complete process to earn an FAA sport pilot certificate including flight training, knowledge test, and practical test. You would not need to start at the beginning, however. The FAA allows applicants in your situation to count the hours flown and logged (including flight training in the UAE from a UAE-licensed instructor) toward the aeronautical experience requirements for various certificates including a sport pilot certificate. For an idea of costs for this process, you would have to contact a flight school that conducts sport pilot training. Also, if you are not a U.S. citizen, you would have to go through the vetting process of the Transportation Security Administration Flight Training Security Program. Join the discussion >
