Final Exam
Question

According to FAR 61.57(b), three night takeoffs and landings to a full stop are required to carry passengers at night. However, I would often take off during the day and land at night, and then make two more takeoffs and landings. To meet the letter of the law, would I have to make a third takeoff and fourth landing?
Answer
The regulation specifies that "within the preceding 90 days" of flying at night with passengers a pilot must have made "at least three takeoffs and three landings to a full stop during the period beginning 1 hour after sunset and ending 1 hour before sunrise." A third takeoff at night is needed to meet this requirement. A fourth landing is not required. If you had unlimited fuel, you could fly until the sun comes up again and then land, and still have completed the necessary three night takeoffs and three night landings. This would not be advisable in most aircraft. Join the discussion >
