United Aviate trains for upset recovery and prevention

United Aviate Academy in Goodyear, Arizona, the only flight training school owned and operated by a major U.S. airline, has partnered with Aviation Performance Solutions (APS), in Mesa, Arizona, to provide their flight students with training on avoiding and recovering from loss of control in flight (LOC-I).

"We are committed to training our student pilots to make sound decisions at a moment's notice to keep themselves and their passengers safe," Dana Donati, United Aviate Academy CEO, said. "The integrated upset recovery program provided by APS places our flight school on the leading edge of the industry's most advanced LOC-I training."

According to the company’s website, APS' training program exceeds regulatory minimums by incorporating its Every Pilot in Control Solution Standard (EPIC-S2)—a system the company has been perfecting for more than 25 years while working closely with regulatory and oversight agencies like the FAA, the International Civil Aviation Organization, and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency. The program centers on "instructor-led academics, on-aircraft and advanced simulator training, and online virtual education."

"APS is honored to play a key role in United Aviate Academy's expansive flight training program," said APS CEO Paul "BJ" Ransbury. "It is the responsibility of flight schools worldwide to implement effective, transferable, and industry-standardized LOC-I solutions for student pilots that teach them how to expeditiously and correctly recognize, prevent or recover from an airplane upset, the precursor condition to LOC-I."

United Aviate Academy opened in February and uses a fleet of Cirrus SR20 single-engine aircraft. The school aims to train about 5,000 new pilots by 2030, with 50 percent of those pilots being women or people of color.
