University of Georgia Aviation Club raising funds for scholarship

The University of Georgia Aviation Club is hosting a spring fly-in April 24 at Athens/Ben Epps Airport to help fund an inaugural student pilot scholarship. The event is the latest fundraising effort for the student-run aviation club, which began in 2009 and now numbers more than 50 students. The group was founded to help promote aviation among the Athens, Georgia, student community. The club counts several CFIIs among its participants and recently achieved 50 percent female membership. “As a young woman in aviation, I know firsthand how daunting it can be for young females to imagine themselves in the aviation industry,” said incoming president Amelia Green. The application deadline is April 2.

WAI awarded $475,805 to scholarship winners during the group's virtual conference and recognized them in a video. The organization has an additional 48 scholarships available totaling $256,000, all with an application deadline of May 18.

EAA summer scholarships available

EAA opened scholarship applications for students seeking careers in aviation or pursuing aviation-related science, technology, engineering, and math fields. The application deadline is June 1 for those beginning flight training between July 1 and December 31. Additional scholarship cycles begin September 1, November 15, and January 10, 2022.

Georgia youth program honors Ron Alexander

Peach State Aerodrome’s youth aviation program founded by the late airline pilot, entrepreneur, and aviation mentor Ron Alexander has been renamed in his honor. The Ron Alexander Youth Aviation Program in Williamson, Georgia, supports his mission of “inspiring and guiding youth,” said Cayla McLeod, a private pilot who was introduced to aviation by the Delta Air Lines pilot. The program has awarded 21 scholarships since its inception in 2013. Twenty-two students have soloed, 14 students have earned a private pilot certificate, and one went on to become an A&P mechanic. In addition, students can benefit from five local scholarships provided by friends of the airfield, said youth co-director A.C. Hutson.

Westchester Aviation Association opens three scholarships

The Westchester Aviation Association at Westchester County Airport in White Plains, New York, is offering three scholarships. The Professional Pilot Career Award for a pilot working toward an advanced rating is worth $6,000, and the Introductory Flight Award for ground and flight training is worth $2,500. Both must be used at the Academy of Aviation at Westchester County Airport. The third scholarship, Professional Aviation Development Award, is worth $1,500 for expenses related to continuing education, professional development, testing, and business aviation conference registration.
