Experiencing Launch America
Experiencing Launch America
AOPA Editor in Chief Tom Haines mounted his cellphone to capture this shot of his reaction as the sound waves from the SpaceX Falcon 9 launch wash over him. Haines watched the launch in person May 30 from Florida near the Kennedy Space Center, fulfilling a dream planted in 1969 when he watched on TV as the Apollo 11 Saturn V rocket lifted off. Final Exam
Question

I have a friend who is a U.S. citizen but lived abroad for several years. During this time, he took flight training from a non-FAA CFI. He's now back in the United States and is wondering if he can use that training time toward his FAA private pilot certificate. Can he?
Answer
Yes, he can, provided the instructor is from a "foreign contracting State to the Convention on International Civil Aviation" (the entity that established ICAO), and is authorized to give that training by that country's licensing authority (see FAR 61.41).

For more information, see this discussion in our online Pilot Information Center, where you can ask questions, contribute answers, earn badges, and join our growing pilot community online.
