Pilot products: Certified Foggles

Cool new look for instrument training

It’s hard to look cool with a hood over your head, let alone with a clunky pair of vision-reducing goggles.

Looking cool isn’t the point, of course. The point is to learn how to fly an airplane without outside visual references.

But CFII Kyle McClung, the founder of Certified Foggles, thinks you should be able to have some fun while you’re learning.

“One of the best ways I found to make my students feel comfortable was to make them laugh,” he said. “During a flight lesson I would take the controls from my student, allow them to take a breath and regroup, hand them a pair of IFR training glasses with eyeballs drawn on them, and on cue I would inevitably get a chuckle. What better way to make someone feel comfortable and enjoy flight training?”

That’s how he created Certified Foggles, which take the chunky vision-reducing eyewear to a cool new level. The glasses are printed with your choice of designs, including the U.S. flag, the Canadian maple leaf, sectional chart, wood grain, colors, and—yes—cartoon eyes. You can also create a custom design.

Aside from being funky and fun, Certified Foggles are functional. The adhesive film that serves as the base for the design also cuts out the glare that can occur with plain fogged lenses.

PRICE: Certified Foggles start at $21.95 per pair. Shipping is free within the United States.
