Started by Dan Denney in Boise, Idaho, the Kitfox company is on its third owners, John and Debra McBean. The 15,500-square-foot manufacturing facility is located on Homedale Municipal Airport (S66) in the southwest corner of the state. Promising the “thrill of building” one’s own aircraft, the Kitfox Super Sport has a wide cockpit, folding wings, and can easily convert from tailwheel to nosewheel. Its side-by-side seating promises a shared experience with pilot and passenger, unlike the tandem seating in most tailwheel aircraft that can often keep pilot and passenger in solitude. A 100-horsepower Rotax-powered Kitfox flies at about 120 mph true airspeed (with normal-size tires; backcountry tundra tires will steal about 5 mph). The Super Sport can be equipped with Continental, Lycoming, Rotec, or Rotax engines. The wings fold up to store the airplane in a garage or a small hangar. Kitfox Aircraft has an agreement with Stick and Rudder Aviation in Boise for training on the tailwheel model. If a customer does not have a tailwheel endorsement, he or she will when training is complete. This is a rugged aircraft and parts are indicative: LP Aero windscreens and windows, Grove landing gear and brakes.
