Michigan airport surveys users on growth
A general aviation airport just northeast of Detroit’s Class B airspace has launched an online survey to help officials weigh the merits of lengthening its 4,000-foot runway to 5,000 feet or more.
Romeo State Airport, about 40 miles from Detroit, has space to accommodate growth on its premises, but the airport would need a longer Runway 18/36 to become a destination for many business jets and other aircraft, said Kyle Lewis, AOPA Great Lakes regional manager.
Runway 18 has a 470-foot displaced threshold. Runway 36 is usable at its full length, according to the airport's chart supplement listing.
To get a sense of demand for a longer runway at the state-owned airport, Mark Weigand, AOPA’s Airport Support Network volunteer at Romeo State Airport, has created a short online survey seeking feedback from fleet operators and others who use the airport. About 50 aircraft are based at the field.
Lewis said he hopes the survey will “help airport management and the state of Michigan determine the number of operations and type of operators that use the airport” and find out which operations would benefit from a runway extension, he said after a visit to the field.
“The airport is situated within an hour’s drive of Detroit and offers space to grow. Ramp space is plentiful, and there is room for the development of corporate/executive hangars,” he said.
