Michigan celebrates GA

September marked a month’s celebration of aviation in Michigan, including an official proclamation by Gov. Rick Snyder and a three-day air tour bringing aviation’s local heritage to life for residents.

Snyder issued a Michigan Aviation Month proclamation recognizing aviation’s $10 billion annual contribution to Michigan’s economy, and honoring its 235 public-use airports, 70 licensed flight schools, 6,000 registered aircraft, 16,000 pilots, and 225 aircraft dealers.

The air tour has been conducted annually by the Michigan Aviation Association since 1929. This year’s air tour took place Sept. 21 to 23, with events scheduled at eight airports.

AOPA joined with the Michigan Aeronautics Commission, Michigan Bureau of Aeronautics, and other aviation organizations to introduce the community to aviation, said Bryan Budds, AOPA Great Lakes regional manager.

“The tour is an opportunity for pilots to see different parts of the state, and introduces the community to aviation,” Budds said.
