When you write the FAA to express your support of the AOPA / EAA Medical Exemption request, here are a few things you should say, in your own words:

  • Describe yourself as a pilot, type of pilot certificate(s) held, total hours, how much you fly annually, aircraft owner or renter, how you use your pilot certificate (personal transportation, business, etc.), and please cite other relevant statistics and facts.
  • Include a statement that clearly conveys your support for the AOPA/EAA Medical Exemption request.
  • Describe how you personally assess that you are medically fit to fly between medical exams and how the education course included in this exemption would enhance your ability to evaluate your fitness to fly.
  • Explain to the FAA how allowing an option that reduces the burden of the 3rd class medical certificate for pilots flying recreationally would maintain or increase the number of pilots participating in GA. Feel free to elaborate by highlighting how increased activity benefits all of GA – which in turn allows for flight services and economic activity that benefits the general public.
  • Explain how participating in continuing aviation education increases safety.  Include examples of where learning (through education courses, magazine articles, seminars, etc.) have expanded your aeronautical knowledge and made you a safer pilot.
