CAU's first Reach Flight Center takes flight

Not every aspiring aviator has the ability to pack up their life and move across the country to attend an aviation university. Many start their journey at their local flight school but may need additional support to turn those first flying lessons into a full career pathway.

California Aeronautical University recognized this challenge and created Reach Flight Centers—a way for students to stay rooted in their own communities while still accessing a university-level, career-focused aviation program.

By partnering with approved flight schools nationwide who share CAU’s mission to prepare the next generation of aviation professionals, Reach makes it possible for more students to earn their aviation degree, complete their flight training, and step confidently into the industry’s cockpit.

The very first Reach Flight Center has now taken flight in partnership with Air Fleet Training Systems in Fairfield, New Jersey.

A hybrid pilot career pathway

Reach Flight Centers combine the strengths of both worlds: students complete in-person flight training at their local partner school while pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautics online with CAU. This model gives students the ability to stay close to home while accessing the academic rigor, support, and career pathways of a university dedicated to aviation.

“We’re very excited to launch Reach Flight Centers,” said Matthew Johnston, president of California Aeronautical University. “This new training network expands opportunities for students to access FAA-approved training and aviation education, no matter where they live. We’re especially proud to partner with Air Fleet Training Systems, a highly respected flight school in the New York/New Jersey area, to establish the very first Reach Flight Center.”

Air Fleet Training Systems

Founded in 1991, Air Fleet Training Systems is based at Essex County Airport and has trained thousands of pilots. As an FAR Part 141 and Part 61 approved school, a Cessna Pilot Center, and an AOPA Distinguished Flight School, Air Fleet Training Systems is well-known for its long-standing reputation for excellence, safety, and student success.

Partnering with CAU was a natural step, says Air Fleet owner Alexey Ozerov. “This collaboration expands access to high-quality flight training services for aspiring pilots in the region. This partnership underscores our commitment to supporting the next generation of aviators, while aligning with CAU’s mission to prepare future aviation professionals through innovative training and academic programs."

University strength, local convenience

As a CAU student enrolled through Reach Flight Centers, students gain access to:

  • University-level resources and support services
  • Federal financial aid to those who qualify
  • Structured, fast-track career pathways to commercial pilot careers
  • Direct pathways to both major and regional airlines, including United and SkyWest

Graduates of CAU’s programs have gone on to careers at major airlines, cargo carriers, and in specialized fields like emergency medical services.

A national vision

The launch of Air Fleet Training Systems as the first Reach Flight Center marks the beginning of CAU’s plan to partner with flight schools nationwide, creating new career pathways for aspiring aviators and helping to meet the aviation industry’s critical workforce needs.
