Unless you’re intimately familiar with the company and its goals, Extra Aircraft’s model designations can be confusing. These no-compromise aerobatic beasts were developed primarily for competitions and intense maneuvering, but they can be remarkably docile as well. The 300LP is the base model with a Lycoming AEIO-540-L1B5 300-horsepower engine, two seats, and a steel tube fuselage. The 330LT has a Lycoming AEIO-580-B1A 315-horsepower engine, two seats, and a glass panel. The 330LX keeps the bigger engine but ditches the glass panel for conventional instruments. The 330SC is a single-seat purpose-built aerobat with the bigger engine and a conventional panel. Finally, the new Extra NG is meant to take on the category’s newcomers with a completely composite structure, the bigger Lycoming engine, a single seat, and a Garmin G3X touch.
