When Bell canceled its 206 Jet Ranger, the most popular civil helicopter of all time, owners and pilots were left wondering what would step in to fill the market gap. It turns out Bell filled its own gap with the all-new 505. Powered by a Turbomeca Arrius 2R engine producing 505 horsepower with dual FADEC and a 3,000-hour TBO, the ship has an entirely new look with some re-purposed components. The rotor system is from the Bell 206 L-4, for example. The panel is a Garmin G1000H, and seating is pilot plus four. Bell was proud of the amount of stakeholder input generated through the design process, so it’s no surprise that the helicopter is selling well. About two and a half years after certification more than 200 were already in operation around the world.
