In some ways the Bell 407 is a failed replacement for the company’s 206 L-4 Long Ranger. But sometimes there are very happy accidents. When the company was attempting to come up with a replacement they attached the four-blade rotor system from the Army’s OH-58 onto a 206 L-4 and eventually upgraded and renamed it the 407. Numerous upgrades later, Bell is currently producing the GXi, an IFR-capable helicopter with Garmin G1000H displays and seating capacity for the pilot plus six. A Rolls-Royce 250-C47E4 produces 862 shaft horsepower at takeoff and 761 horsepower for continuous use. With cruise speeds of more than 130 knots and a range of more than 300 miles, the helicopter has found favor with corporate and utility roles.
