STOL Invitational

AOPA is excited to bring you a Short Field Take-off and Landing (STOL) Invitational! While you relax at the Flightline Cookout, Presented by Jeppesen, let some incredibly talented pilots demonstrate backcountry flying techniques.

Interest in STOL and Backcountry flying is spreading across the nation and growing with annual competitions in Alaska and Texas. Experienced pilots use multiple aircraft to demonstrate short take-offs and landings on a turf surface located near the airport infield, in close view of the spectators. The aircraft categories range from single-engine bush airplane to turbine powered, heavy touring aircraft.

All AOPA Fly-Ins will include seminars discussing STOL techniques and Backcountry Flying Safety.

D-Day Squadron

Presented by Signature Flight Support

AOPA, the D-Day Squadron, and the Liberty Jump Team are teaming up to commemorate two anniversary milestones in 2019: The seventy-fifth anniversary of D-Day and AOPA’s official eightieth anniversary, which occurs mere days after the Frederick Fly-In.

The D-Day Squadron’s C-47s and DC-3s will make a special appearance at the Frederick Municipal Airport before they prepare to fly to Normandy, France, for the 75th Anniversary of D-Day. The D-Day Squadron will lead a flight of restored Douglas C-47 Skytrains and Douglas DC-3s across the North Atlantic in tribute to the veterans that took part in the invasion of Europe.

The Liberty Jump Team will provide parachute demonstrations to commemorate the incredible events of D-Day, 75 yeas ago.

Come to the Frederick Fly-In and participate in this momentous milestone in AOPA history and commemorate these incredible aircraft of the Greatest Generation!

Drone Aerial Light Shows

Like electric candles on AOPA’s birthday cake rising into the night sky, a fleet of no fewer than 80 drones will put on a spectacular aviation themed show at each of our 2019 Fly-Ins to celebrate AOPA’s 80th Anniversary.

The Great Lakes Drone Company, producers of custom-crafted displays using customized drones and specialized software to control the night-time aerial display, will provide this fittingly festive aeronautical alternative to fireworks. The Michigan company was among the first in the country to earn FAA waivers to create light shows with dozens of drones flying in digitally choreographed formations.

The shows, now named, AOPA’s 80th Anniversary Star Dance will be at all of the AOPA Fly-Ins this year. #stardance19

Volunteer

Volunteer

AOPA plans the fly-ins, but volunteers bring them to life. Whether it’s setting up the Main Stage area, guiding cars and aircraft into their parking spaces, or taking down displays and exhibits at the end of the event, there are many ways volunteers help make the magic happen. But volunteering isn’t all about hard work – it’s also about meeting other volunteers, seeing the fly-in from the “insider’s” perspective, and making friends and valuable contacts that you will keep for years. You’ll be proud to have participated, knowing that you did your part to support GA. If you want something better than a front-row seat, join our community of AOPA Fly-In volunteers! Plus, we'll feed you and give you a free AOPA Volunteer T-shirt and cap for your efforts!
