“Buying an aircraft can be a complex, drawn-out process, and financing is often compared to buying a house because of the amount of paperwork, documentation, and processing required,” said AOPA Finance Director Emily Meczkowski. “This program makes the process easier than ever. Instead of the complexity of buying a house, it’s much more like buying a car—with less paperwork and a faster approval process.”
The Low-Doc Program began rolling out in February 2025 and is aimed at members purchasing lower-cost, single-engine piston aircraft and offers a more efficient path to financing for pilots who meet the program’s criteria.
Meczkowski said this streamlined application process could serve as a model for future offerings. “We expect programs like this to continue to grow over time, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see other lenders we work with to move in this direction as well.”
“This program isn’t for everyone,” said Meczkowski. “If you’re in the market for a turboprop or high-end piston aircraft, one of our other financing programs will likely be a better option. But for many general aviation pilots shopping for a more affordable aircraft, this program could be a great fit.”
“When we talk about the freedom to fly, it isn’t just about advocacy and protecting access to airports and airspace,” said AOPA President and CEO Darren Pleasance. “It’s also about removing barriers where we can. While aircraft ownership isn’t possible for everyone, this program helps make the process more approachable for members who are ready to take the next step in either purchasing their first aircraft or upgrading.”
