ForeFlight integrates FAA weather cameras

Since rolling out the technology in Alaska, the FAA has expanded weather camera coverage to include hundreds of locations spanning 24 states. At each location, a cluster of up to four cameras upload images on a 10-minute cycle, allowing pilots to observe visibility and precipitation at a given location from anywhere in the world.

The FAA weather camera network—which was built out and continues to expand based on popular demand from pilots—can now be viewed within ForeFlight.

A detailed briefing posted by ForeFlight walks users through the steps to enable the camera layer and begin viewing images within the app. The weather camera map layer requires a ForeFlight Pro-level subscription (Pro Plus or higher for individuals), and is among many new features and updates planned or recently enabled.

Boeing announced on April 22 the sale of ForeFlight (along with Jeppesen and two other companies) to private equity firm Thoma Bravo, a $10.55 billion deal that requires regulatory approval and is expected to close by the end of the year.
