The Division of Aeronautics of Idaho’s Department of Transportation recently published the 2024 Idaho Aviation Accident Score Card (IAASC), which is a comprehensive review of the state’s aviation accidents published so pilots and those operating within the aviation system can learn from the experiences of others. Data is compiled directly from the NTSB database and obtained from the AOPA Air Safety Institute’s Richard G. McSpadden Report.

“The report includes yearly comparisons and summaries, total number of General Aviation (GA) accidents, fatal accidents, fatalities, pilot qualifications, age, and class of aircraft. In addition, the IAASC provides an overview of Idaho aviation trends,” according to the IAASC.

The 2024 report reviewed accident data from 2022 and found aircraft accidents had decreased from the previous year, though fatal accidents had increased—with a majority of accidents, at 69 percent, attributed to “pilot error.”

The aeronautics division is also taking this opportunity to highlight additional resources to promote safety for pilots flying throughout the state. The Idaho Airport Facility Directory, which is a resource detailing information about aviation facilities throughout the state as well as useful flight information for VFR pilots, was just updated into a searchable PDF accessible when imported into ForeFlight.

The state’s camera and weather station resource list is also suitable for ForeFlight integration.

Idaho-based pilots and visitors should take advantage of these free and easily accessible resources so that flying across the state can be safer and more enjoyable.
