Plane-Power alternators reintroduced

Hartzell Engine Technologies of Montgomery, Alabama, has reintroduced the Plane-Power line of alternators that, according to the company, deliver “more continuous power at lower engine rpms" than any other alternator for piston-engine aircraft.

Plane-Power's ALT-FLX FAA-PMA certified, 28V/150 Amp to 14V/100 Amp high output, belt-driven alternators will be sold as inspected and tested factory-rebuilt units while the company works to resolve “component sourcing issues,” said company President Mike Disbrow in a Dec. 5 news release.

Customers had sought the belt-driven, high-output alternators for their value and flexibility of installation from Plane-Power, which was acquired by Hartzell Engine Technologies in 2014.

“Unfortunately, as with some other Plane-Power products, we encountered component sourcing issues that needed to be resolved before we could again meet market demands with new products,” Disbrow said.

“In the interim, our solution is to offer factory-rebuilt units until the new component suppliers can be brought on line. There will be some internal components that, while not new, will be inspected, tested and certified to meet new standards, and they will be covered by the same 24-month warranty we provide on every new Plane-Power alternator,” he added.

Owners of aircraft with high electrical demand during ground operations from avionics suites or electrically powered air conditioning systems “will appreciate the abundant electrical power they will get at idle with these Plane-Power alternators,” he said.

Plane-Power will offer installation-specific kits that include all necessary hardware for specific aircraft/engine applications covered by FAA Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) SA11137SC, and should reduce installation time.

“Previously, Plane-Power had sold installation-specific equipment, such as mounting kits and voltage regulators a la carte,” Disbrow said. “Now it all comes together.”
