Question of the Week
|
Question
You plan to purchase a quadcopter for your kids for Christmas. You're worried that they might get themselves into trouble flying it, partly because of all the attention drones have been getting from the FAA and in the news. You want to ensure that they have fun but stay within the established rules. Where can you find information to help educate you and your kids? Do the same rules that apply to remote-control aircraft also apply to small quadcopters?
Answer
Yes. Noncommercial use of drones falls under the same rules as RC aircraft. Check out the FAA's Model Aircraft Operations Web page, which outlines the dos and don'ts of flying RC aircraft and drones. The FAA's Know Before You Fly website also presents useful information. It's good that you're thinking about educating yourself and your kids about the topic before flying. RC model flying has been done safely for many years. Education is one way to ensure that manned and unmanned aircraft coexist without adversely affecting safety.
