It was at the AOPA Annual Convention in November 1982, when a small group of older pilots conceived the idea of an organization exclusively for senior aviators. They set the eligibility age at 80 and called their creation the United Flying Octogenarians, or in pilot speak UFOs. The concept was a sound one.
Today, the UFO is an international organization, approaching 1800 members, flying in the U.S. (all 50 states), Puerto Rico, Canada, Mexico, Australia, the United Kingdom, France, Norway, Switzerland, New Zealand, and the Virgin Islands. Our mission is to promote longevity and safety in aviation for older pilots worldwide, to inspire youth to fly, and to encourage fellowship, not only with senior pilots but with all pilots.
We are proud to become an AOPA Alliance Partner. For many years our annual banquet was held in concurrence with the AOPA convention. Joining the Alliance Program is like coming home to where we were born. The sort of whimsey that led our founders to choose our name still prevails today when we gather together and tell each other how good we used to be. We are also establishing the “UFO Ground Crew” for pilots aged 75 and up. This group will be encouraged to come to all UFO events and activities and take an active role in local activities.
Once you are a member of the United Flying Octogenarians you are a “forever” member, and age is no longer a factor.
Come join us “Where the history of aviation is still flying.”
