Project Pilot Update

AOPA Project Pilot gives experienced pilots a way to share their love of flight by mentoring student pilots. Backed by the resources of AOPA, mentors help guarantee the best possible introduction to flying, from first flight to checkride.

It all started when I became the 2,000th new private pilot in the AOPA Project Pilot program. Earning my certificate has given me wonderful, unexpected opportunities to visit new places, meet interesting people, and fly a variety of aircraft. Being a pilot has also helped me as an FBO general manager. I'm approaching 200 hours of flight time, and would like to be a corporate pilot. I'm working on instrument and commercial ratings in a Piper Warrior, and want to add a multiengine rating. The support of those around me, starting with my dad as my Project Pilot mentor, has been significant in my pursuit of flying and other interests. The confidence I gained enabled me to try other not-so-traditional activities. I cofounded a 501(c)(3) nonprofit guide dog training organization called Paws Abilities Inc., and my dream job would combine my love of flying with my love for animals. — Debbie Boone AOPA 1286171
